Some On-going Projects

    • Project Manager for the ongoing SCADA/EMS upgrading project supplied by ABB for Kenya Power and Lighting Company                    Ltd. in Kenya. The project involves Site Survey, design , testing and commissioning of the SCADA system in all KPLC substations          and Control Centres throughout the country
    • Electrical consultant with WESTCONSULT carrying out the upgrading and rehabilitation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport           facilities. as the Electrical consultant.
    • Electrical consultant with WESTCONSULT carrying out the Completion works for Nyanza Provincial Headquarters building
    • Teamed up with DECON Engineering Consultants in the Rural Electrification Materplan Upgrade project for the Ministry of               Energy in Kenya.
    • Teamed up with Global Synergy Link and Norplan Consultants in the ongoing project for consulting services for upgrading                   and optimisation of the two Kiambere 75MW hydro generating machines for KENGEN.
    • Consulting services for Athi River Mining 66/3.3kV 10MVA transformer installation works at Athi River, Kenya.
    • Electrical Consultancy work for the 2x23MVA, 132/6.6 transformer substation for MAWENI Cement  factory in Tanga, Tanzania

Geothermal Power Development projects

Has participated in consultancy services for Geothermal power plants such as on Optimisation of Olkaria Geothermal steam field

and Electrical services Optimization.

Also as an independent consultant in examination of installation and commissioning reports and preparation of an independent report

for the 220kV transmission and substation installation works for the Orpower_4 Independent Power producer

Consultancy services for large power consumers

Carried out consultancy and maintenance services for large power consumers in their reinforcement projects.

Consultancy Service for Various Government Bodies:

  • January 2004, was appointed member of the Kenya Grid Code Steering Committee at the Kenya Electricity Generation                               Board to represent the Institution of Engineers of Kenya.
  • In March 2003, was appointed by the Kenya Government as member of a Committee to look into the Technical and Procurement              Procedures of the Kenya Power and Lighting Co. and KenGen.
  • In June 2009, was appointed member of the Dispute Resolution Panel in the Matter on the case of Chandaria Industries Ltd versus             Kenya Power and Lighting Co to resolve a dispute in the metering equipment.

Work on KPLC National Grid, KenGen Stations and other establishments

Has carried out consultancy and other services on the national power grid including

  • Supervision of erection and commissioning of switchgear, relays and control systems in a 10-bay 132 kV substation for a 76MW diesel power station in Mombasa for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and ABB (Kenya), including interfacing work with the existing KPLC network.
  • In January 2005, consulting in Electricity Generation projects including Optimization of Kiambere Hydro Generating plant
  • Commissioning of various substations such as the 23Mva, 66/11kV substations built by Asea Brown Boveri for Kenya Powerand Lighting Co. in Nairobi.
  • Specifications, supervision of installation, testing and commissioning of 33kV. interconnector circuits and substation for Westmont
  • Power 46 MW Power Barge at Kipevu.
  • From October 2001 to October 2002, worked for Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) Company as the Protection and Control System Commissioning Engineer at the 220/132/33/11kV substation rehabilitation project at TANESCO National Grid Control Centre in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
  • In January/February 2007, Supervision of emergency installation and temporary repair work for Orpower-4 33kV switchgear after a breakdown. Assessment of the proposed electrical connections of the proposed 60MW additional Geothermal plant at Orpower.

Consultancy work on Mini hydro power projects

Involved in advisory capacity during the installation of Mini hydro power generators for for clients including:

  • Finlays in Kericho.
  • Mini Hydro plant for KTDA at Imenti Tea Factory
  • Proposed Teremi Hydro Elctric Project in Mt. Elgon

The above covered total technical administration of the projects from inception to commissioning.


I worked through the ranks within the Kenya Power and Lighting Co, beginning as an Assistant Power Systems Protection Engineer

and rising to the position of Technical Services Manager within the company.

Duties as the Technical Services Manager included the overall technical administration of the Technical Services Division of KPLC

which covered budgeting and budget control, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of protection, metering, electrical plant,

transformers and communication equipment in the company.

The work covered generation, transmission and distribution systems from low voltage up to 220,000 volts throughout the Republic of Kenya.
